Foundations — Understanding What You're Going Through

The beginner's course: what a Muslim believes about the unseen, what ruqyah really is, and the illnesses people talk about — explained calmly, with no folklore and no fear.

Most people arrive at this subject frightened, and reading whatever the search results put in front of them. This course is the calm version: what a Muslim actually believes about the unseen, what ruqyah actually is, and what the illnesses people talk about actually are — taken from the Quran, the Sunnah and the scholars, with the folklore left out. It will not tell you what is wrong with you. It will tell you enough that you stop being afraid of the wrong things, and know what to do next.

Read a section

Two or three hundred words on one idea, with the verse or the hadith right there beside it.

Do something with it

A question, a pair to match, an order to put right. The lesson will not close until they are done.

Keep what you learn

Notes, highlights and progress travel with your account — and wait for you where you stopped.

Before you start

Isthiscourseforyou?

It is written for one kind of reader, and it is honest about who it will not help.

Yes, if…

  • Something is happening to you or to someone you love, and you don't know what it is
  • You have read a hundred frightening things online and want one calm, sourced account
  • You want to know what ruqyah really is before you let anyone perform one on you
  • You're a parent who wants to protect a household without living in fear
  • You keep hearing the words — 'ayn, sihr, mass, waswasa — and want them explained properly

Not yet, if…

  • You want a diagnosis — no course, and no person, can give you one
  • You're looking for someone to name who has harmed you; we don't teach that and never will
  • You're training to treat others — that is the Raqi Course, and this one comes first
  • You need help tonight, right now — start at Help now, and come back to this after

By the end

Whatyou'llbeabletodo.

Not a reading list — a set of things you will actually be able to do when you close the last lesson.

I know what I am dealing with, I know it is bounded by Allah's decree, and I know what to do in the morning.
The finish line
  1. 01Say plainly what the jinn are and what they cannot do — without the folklore
  2. 02Tell a genuine ruqyah from a false one within the first two minutes
  3. 03Understand the evil eye, sihr, mass and waswasa without fearing all four at once
  4. 04Recognise a charlatan by what he asks for and what he does
  5. 05Know when the answer is a doctor, and why that is never a lack of faith
  6. 06Perform the fundamentals of self-ruqyah with confidence

The shape of it

Howit'sbrokendown.

Eight modules, each three to five lessons. A lesson is a page you read straight down: a section of teaching, then something to do with it — a question, a matching exercise, an order to put right — then the next section. You can't finish a lesson without doing them, and nothing is hidden from you while you read.

Before you begin

Whatyou'llneedandwhatthiswillnotdo.

What you'll need

  1. 01A free account, so your progress, notes and highlights are kept
  2. 02No prior knowledge, and no Arabic — every verse is given in Arabic, transliteration and English
  3. 03Somewhere quiet for eight or ten minutes at a time

About four hours in total. Most people take a fortnight over it, a lesson or two a night.

What this course does not do

  • It does not diagnose you. No list of symptoms on any website can, and this one will not pretend to
  • It does not replace a doctor. Medical care comes first and runs alongside ruqyah, always — that rule is repeated in every module that touches illness
  • It does not train you to treat other people
  • It does not name who harmed you, and it will not teach you to find out

Every lesson
