The Unseen World

The full curriculum — the jinn, sihr, the eye and the whisper, sourced and examined.

Everything the other courses had to summarise, at full depth and with the sources named. Who the jinn actually are and what they cannot do. What mass is, its six causes and its six kinds — two of which are not possession at all. What sihr is and what the sorcerer buys with it. The eye, envy and the difference between them. The whisper, and where it ends and illness begins. And the whole forbidden marketplace that has grown around all of it. There is an examination at the end, and a certificate for passing it.

Read a section

Two or three hundred words on one idea, with the verse or the hadith right there beside it.

Do something with it

A question, a pair to match, an order to put right. The lesson will not close until they are done.

Keep what you learn

Notes, highlights and progress travel with your account — and wait for you where you stopped.

Before you start

Isthiscourseforyou?

It is written for one kind of reader, and it is honest about who it will not help.

Yes, if…

  • You have done the earlier courses and want the full picture rather than the summary
  • You want to know where each position actually comes from — Quran, hadith, a named scholar, or practitioner experience
  • You keep meeting claims about the unseen and cannot tell which are established and which are folklore
  • You want to be able to recognise a forbidden treatment the moment it is described to you
  • You are studying this seriously and want something you can be examined on

Not yet, if…

  • You are looking for a quick answer about your own situation — start with Foundations, and see a doctor
  • You want a diagnosis, or a checklist to diagnose someone else
  • You want techniques for dealing with jinn directly — this course does not teach that, and explains why
  • You are training to treat the public — that is the Raqi Course

By the end

Whatyou'llbeabletodo.

Not a reading list — a set of things you will actually be able to do when you close the last lesson.

I know what is established, where it comes from, and what is folklore — and I can tell the difference in front of anybody.
The finish line
  1. 01State what a Muslim is required to believe about the unseen, and where the limits of that knowledge are
  2. 02Describe who the jinn are from the Quran and Sunnah — and what they cannot do
  3. 03Distinguish the six kinds of mass, including the two that are not possession at all
  4. 04Explain what sihr is, what the sorcerer's pact involves, and the ruling on both
  5. 05Separate the evil eye from envy, and know the whole of prevention rather than half of it
  6. 06Recognise waswasa, and know where it ends and a treatable illness begins
  7. 07Identify any forbidden treatment from its description, and say precisely what is wrong with it
  8. 08Hold the balance the scholars held — neither denial nor obsession

The shape of it

Howit'sbrokendown.

Eight modules and an examination. The first module is about how we know things at all, because everything after it depends on the difference between a verse, a hadith, a scholar's position and a practitioner's experience.

  1. 01Knowing the unseenWhat belief in al-ghayb requires, where the limits of knowledge are, and how to weigh a verse against a hadith against a scholar against a practitioner's experience.4 lessons · 42 min
  2. 02The jinnWho they are in the Quran and Sunnah — their creation, their world, their religions, and the hard limits on what they can do.4 lessons · 43 min
  3. 03Mass — the touchWhat mass is, its six causes, its six kinds — two of which are not possession at all — and the whole vocabulary of sar', junūn and lamam.6 lessons · 72 min
  4. 04SihrWhat sihr actually is, what the sorcerer buys with it, how strong it is and is not, and the ruling on both the act and the one who works it.5 lessons · 59 min
  5. 05The eye and the envierAl-'ayn and hasad — what each is, how they differ, why envy runs hardest among peers, and how a person cures it in his own heart.5 lessons · 59 min
  6. 06The whisperWaswasa: what it is, how the Sunnah answers it, and the point at which it becomes an illness with a name and a treatment.4 lessons · 44 min
  7. 07The forbidden marketplaceAmulets, nushrah, 'white magic', the fortune-teller, the zar — what makes a treatment forbidden, and how to recognise each one on sight.6 lessons · 72 min
  8. 08Living with the unseenTaking the means and tawakkul, what to do when treatment does not work, the ten means of Ibn al-Qayyim, and the balance between denial and obsession.4 lessons · 45 min
  9. 09The examinationTwenty-five questions from across the course. Pass at 80% for the certificate; retakes are unlimited and free.1 lessons · 30 min

Before you begin

Whatyou'llneedandwhatthiswillnotdo.

What you'll need

  1. 01Foundations first, and ideally Self-Ruqyah, Properly
  2. 02A free account, so your progress, notes and certificate are kept
  3. 03About ten hours — most people spread it over a month
  4. 04No Arabic required — everything is given in Arabic, transliteration and English

A module a week suits most people. The examination is best taken a few days after the last module rather than straight after it.

What this course does not do

  • It does not diagnose anybody, and it gives no checklist for diagnosing anybody
  • It does not replace medical or mental-health care — that comes first throughout
  • It does not teach addressing, questioning or expelling jinn — that belongs to the Raqi Course, and the reasons are given in module three
  • It teaches no forbidden treatment, and describes them only so you can recognise and refuse them
