A quick, honest check you can run on any raqi, healer or ‘sheikh’ before you go — or before you go back.
If you have been to someone for ruqyah, or are thinking of going, answer these questions honestly about what they asked for and what they did. Ruqyah according to the Quran and Sunnah needs nothing from you except your presence and your trust in Allah; anything else a practitioner asks for tells you something. This is not a judgement on you. It is a way to see clearly what happened, so you can decide what to do next.
Did they ask for your mother's name?
Did they ask for something from your body or belongings, such as hair, nails, worn clothing, a photograph or a used item?
Did they write anything you could not read, such as symbols, number squares, scattered letters or reversed script?
Did they give you something to wear, carry, bury, or hang in your home?
Did they recite words that were not Quran, not a known du‘a, and not in any language you or they could explain?
Did they instruct you to slaughter an animal in a specific way, of a specific colour, at a specific place, or without mentioning Allah's name, or to use its blood?
Did they tell you things about your life, your past or the person who "did it" that they could not have known?
Did they tell you to do something impure or forbidden, such as sitting in a graveyard at night, avoiding washing or prayer for a period, or writing with blood?
Did they insist on being alone with you, or with a woman without her mahram, or ask a woman to remove her hijab or clothing?
Did they claim to have a jinn servant, a hereditary power, or a special gift that others do not have?
Did they read your palm, a cup, a bowl of water, or ask for your date of birth or star sign?
Did they demand a large sum, or did the fee rise as the case was declared more serious?
Did they guarantee a cure, or threaten that things would get worse if you did not return?
Did they tell you to stop seeing doctors or to stop prescribed medication?
Did they discourage you from reciting over yourself, or say ruqyah only works if they do it?
Did they refuse to explain what they recited or gave you, or tell you not to tell anyone?
Did they diagnose sihr or jinn before you had said much, or does every case with them turn out to be sihr?
Did they sell you special water, oil, honey or other products at a high price and say they were necessary?
